ConservaWatt™ HID Controller
T5 Fluorescent Technology

The ConservaWatt™ HID Controller
Beyond standard lighting applications, our firm's technological leadership has put us at the forefront of the energy efficient lighting market with such proprietary products as our ConservaWatt™ Control Module, for High Intensity lighting applications that includes outdoor parking, street lamps, bridges and tunnels, and sports facilities, warehouse and manufacturing facilities, gymnasiums, airplane hangers and government facilities. These types of properties can also be greatly benefited with our control modules with savings of up to 30% and increased periods between lighting maintenance.
The ConservaWatt™ HID Controller operates on the principle that High Intensity Discharge lighting needs 20-30% more energy to achieve ignition and maximum light output than the energy required to maintain optimum light output. Conventional HID systems continue to supply this high level of energy to the lamp and ballast every minute that it is in operation.
The ConservaWatt™ unit allows HID systems to come up to full output and then slowly decreases the voltage 15-30% while correcting for power factor and total harmonic distortion. This results in a 15-30% energy savings without perceptible light loss. This reduction in voltage and heat in both the lamp and ballasts also will extend lamp life and ballast life significantly.
The ConservaWatt™ system is ideal for those HID applications where retrofit to more efficient HID sources or fixture replacement is not economically feasible. Ease of installation allows immediate savings without major disruptions of the workplace or complex recircuiting or rewiring.
ConservaWatt Product Information
T5 and T5 High Output lamps exhibit many of the superior characteristics of the T8 lamp. In fact, T5s exceed the performance of T8 lamps in lumen maintenance and environmental impact and their smaller size can increase optical control efficiency and flexibility of luminaire design.
T5 lamps maintain 95% of their original light output during their rated life. T8 lamps are in the range of 85%. The higher light output from T5 high output lamps may reduce the number of luminaries per project leading to higher energy savings.
The compact size of T5 lamps reduces the amount of materials used in their manufacture, the potential for toxic substance contamination, and packaging material for shipment and sale. A T5 lamp uses 38% less glass and phosphor material than a T8 lamp. A T5 lamp uses less than 5 milligrams (0.0002 ounces) of mercury. Moving from T12 lamps to T5 lamps can reduce packaging material by 50%.
T5 High Output Option, T5 High Output High Bay System
The T5 High Output lamp and electronic ballast combination has proven to be a highly effective energy efficiency solution in the commercial and industrial marketplace very often being the preferred replacement for current fluorescent office systems and standard Metal Halide High Bay systems. Much lower energy consumption, superior lumen maintenance and superior color rendering are strong reasons for the use of T5 High output systems.
Lower Energy Consumption, When comparing traditional metal halide technology to T5HO technology, the total system efficacy is significantly higher over the life of the system (produces more light with less energy). This allows replacing a 400-watt metal halide high bay fixture with a 234-watt T5HO high bay fixture and maintain higher light levels over time.
Higher Lumen Maintenance Rates, Both metal halide and T5HO lose some of their light output at they age. It is typical for metal halide lighting to lose 40% or more of its light output over its life as T5HO maintains over 95% of its initial light output as it ages. Since the rated life on the two products is virtually identical, it is possible to reduce the total number of fixtures that a facility requires to meet light levels with T5HO.
More Control Options, T5HO fixtures come with a variety of control options available. Because they can be specified with multiple ballasts, they can be wired for multiple switching. They also have instant restrike capability which allows them to be turned fully off with either motion sensors or daylight harvesting. The fixtures can be continuously dimmed down to 0% with almost a linear energy savings to the dimming percentage unlike HID that can only be stepped down to 50%.
Instant Restrike, Traditional metal halide fixtures require a minimum of two minutes to turn on initially and as much as 15 minutes to cool down and restrike. T5HO lamps can be turned off and on immediately without requiring any special handling.
Highest Color Rendering at Lower Cost, Most metal halide lamps offer a mediocre color-rendering index (CRI) of 60. Color rendering is what makes colors appear more natural to the naked eye. A high CRI allows employees and customers to perform their tasks more easily. T5HO lamps carry a minimum CRI of 85. In order to get a similar CRI from metal halide, lamp costs traditionally quintuple.
More Lamps Per Fixture, If a metal halide fixture has a lamp failure, it typically will leave a large dark spot beneath it causing liability. T5HO fixtures have multiple lamps within them. This keeps some light coming down even if there are one or more failures within the fixture itself.
Electronic Ballasted Metal Halide Solution
Recent advances in electronic ballasted Metal Halide technology has overcome some of the traditional drawbacks inherent to HID lighting. Some of the features of this technology are:
In extreme environments the light output of electronic HID is not significantly effected by very hot or very cold ambient temperatures, like warehousing environments that do not have adequate venting or air conditioning systems or in very hot industrial environments. Also the ability to start and operate in very cold conditions makes HID a good choice in refrigerator and freezer environments.
Electronic HID is also usually recommended in very high (above 40 feet)
mounting height scenarios, especially where horizontal illumination is of
primary importance. High wattage MH systems are available that will provide
high levels of horizontal illumination at these very high mounting heights.
